Editor's Selections:

Crowded hospital emergency rooms. In 2006, Americans made over 1.1 billion visits to physician offices and hospital emergency rooms, the Centers for Disease Control said, citing a 26% increase since 1996. The CDC report shows that many without health insurance coverage use hospital emergency rooms as their primary source for health care, causing long waiting time for patients with genuine medical emergencies, the American College of Emergency Physicians said.

Phantom subscribers. Apparently, nobody at The New York Times thought it odd when its readership in LaCrosse, Wis., jumped by 8,500 subscribers. A newspaper distributor, who used the NYT's website to enter fictitious subscriptions, was arrested and charged with defrauding the NYT of approximately $227,096, said the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

10,000th transnational gang member arrested. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested the 10,000th gang member under Operation Community Shield which started in 2005 to weed out transnational gangs gaining hold in urban and suburban U.S. cities. Number 10,000 was a Mexican national with a long criminal record who was caught in Chicago.
