Federal Register and Congressional Record

When our web-posting schedule was recently changed from overnight to mid-afternoon, several subscribers said they missed having Government Policy Newslinks in the early morning because it provided their link to the daily Federal Register. I shared a secret so they could continue to receive it as soon as the daily edition is activated by the Government Printing Office (usually around 8:30 a.m. in the Eastern Time Zone). It's as easy as 1-2 (there's no 3). Here's how:

1. Open the previous day’s Government Policy Newslinks report and click on the Federal Register link. (The previous day’s edition will be displayed.)

2. Place your cursor in the URL and simply type today’s date into it. The date is at the end of the URL in YYMMDD format. Just change the DD part (and the MM part, too, if today is a different month).

EXAMPLE:

The URL for the April 19 Federal Register is: http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fedreg/a070419c.html

To display the April 20 edition, just change 19 to 20.

The same applies to the Congressional Record which uses eight digits to express the date: YYYYMMDD. Just change the DD part (and the MM part, too, if today is the first day of a new month).

EXAMPLE:

The URL for the April 18 Congressional Record is:
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/B?r110:@FIELD(FLD003+d)+@FIELD(DDATE+20070418)

To display the April 19 edition, just change 18 to 19

Tabbed browsing

This is a terrific shortcut if you scan through Government Policy Newslinks and need to examine dozens of press releases. Tabbed browsing is not available on all web browsers. I know it is available with Internet Explorer 7.0 and Mozilla Firefox. (Let me know of any others that should be added here.)

Just hold the control key down while clicking on the links for the press releases you want to see. Instead of displaying on your screen, each link you click will open a tabbed file to hold the press release until you are ready to view it. I can create about 50 or 60 tabs at a time (I think the limitations are determined by the size of your computer’s memory or storage cache or whatever.) The magical part is that the files are being downloaded while you are reading the first press release. The rest of the press releases will display instantly when you click on their tabs—no need to wait for them to download one at a time.

When you click on a tab, an ‘X’ will appear in it. When you’re finished examining the webpage, clicking on the ‘X’ will delete the current webpage and display the next one.

Typesize too small? Too big?

Hold down your control key while turning the wheel on your mouse. Turn the wheel upward and the type will grow large. Turn the wheel downward and the type will shrink to a smaller size.

Move to top or bottom of page

You really don’t need all those “Back to Top of Page” buttons to jump to the top of the page. Just hold the control and home keys down together to jump to the top; and the control and end keys to jump to the bottom.

Homepage Or use your "back button" to return to the previously viewed page.
